Coppicing

Please enquire for woodland management services.

When a British broadleaved tree is cut down, new shoots spring up from its stump and several smaller trees grow from the original one. The practice of coppicing has been carried out in our woodlands for centuries, most commonly with Hazel, Ash, Sweet Chestnut and Oak in rotations of between 7 to 20 years. It is quite possible that some coppice stools may be up to 1000 years old.

In recent years there has been a revival of interest in coppicing, both for its use as a tool in nature conservation and for the value of traditional coppice skills. In order that it is not confined to a handful of nature reserves, the future of coppicing depends on an appreciation of this ancient craft and its sustainable products.
