For centuries craftsmen have woven fence panels from Hazel, known as hurdles, to use as stock fencing. Gate hurdles were made of cleft Ash to be strong and light. People now appreciate the aesthetic value of these tough rustic fences and they have become increasingly popular for use in gardens where they are an excellent wind-break, boundary fence or trellis panel.
There is great skill involved in splitting the Hazel, setting up the weave and twisting the fibrous rods to build a durable panel in the traditional way which will last up to 10 years.
On this course you will be taught all the necessary techniques to build your own hazel hurdle and/or gate hurdle and will receive a free copy of John Boakes’ book ‘Making a Woven Hurdle’ which features Dan alongside a few craftsmen of yester-year.
Lunch and other refreshments will be provided.
Price: £150 per day for 1 person plus £60 per day for each additional person (Includes all materials and ‘coppicer’s lunch’)
Course Instructor: Dan Watson
